Overview:

Our Patients’ Forum is made up of local people who are interested in helping to improve local health and social care services. Some of the members belong to Patient Participation Groups (PPGs) or volunteer for the NHS in some way. We are always looking for new people to join us and you don't need any particular experience!

Frank Costello, Deputy Chair of the CCG Chairs the Patient Forum workshops. Frank sits on the CCG Governing Body and has responsibility for Patient and Public Involvement. Frank acts as a direct link between the group and the CCGs Governing Body.

Some members of Patients Forum help to assure the CCGs Governing Body that people are getting involved in the work of the CCG and they are invited to give an update every few months. They also have input into writing our Annual Patient & Public Annual Report.

Wigan Borough Engagement Group

Date: Ongoing

Overview:

In 2017 we set up the Wigan Borough Engagement Group to look at the patient and public involvement in the Wigan Borough Locality Plan, “Further and Faster Towards 2020”. The group is chaired by a local resident. The members of the group are local patients and residents from across the health economy:

  • Wigan Borough CCG Patients Forum
  • Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust Governors
  • Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Governors
  • North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Governors
  • Wigan Council
  • Healthwatch Wigan & Leigh

The Wigan Borough Engagement Group plays a role in assuring the CCGs Governing Body about its Patient & Public Involvement activity in the Locality Plan.

Members of the group use their background experiences and interests to look to see if services can be improved, simplified and standardised across the Borough. The group also advise on what patient and public engagement work is needed in different projects. Members seek feedback from their own networks and groups.

The group currently meets on a monthly basis and the Terms of Reference can be found below:

How to get involved:

Readers Panel

Date: Ongoing

Overview:

Wigan Borough CCG designs a range of information and documents for the public on a regular basis. The Readers Panel is a group of local residents who help to make sure that documents are accessible, readable and in Plain English.

In the past year the Readers Panel has reviewed a number of things such as:

  • Surveys
  • patient information leaflets
  • strategy documents
  • service leaflets
  • posters

If you sign up to the Readers Panel we will ask you how you would like to receive documents to review. We can send things out via post or email depending on how you prefer to work. When we send you a document you can choose to ignore or respond with feedback as your time allows!

Members may be asked to sign something to say they will not share the information wider than the readers panel until the final version is agreed upon.

How to get involved:

We need more people to join the Readers Panel. If you would like to join, please get in touch on 01942 482711 or shapeyournhs@wiganboroughccg.nhs.uk

Feedback:

We do make changes to documents based on the feedback we receive from the Readers Panel. To give you an idea of the type of feedback we get some examples of changes made are listed below:

  • Experience survey - questions re-written to be more neutral. The purpose and intended use of the survey was better explained.
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) leaflet - some of the language was updated and made more personal, i.e. "i" and "my medication" rather than being generic.
  • End of Life Strategy - there was feedback that the strategy was long and the key points did not stand out. A much shorter public friendly summary was produced which summarises the essential information from the strategy.
  • Healthier Wigan Partnership Leaflet - the language was updated to reflect that patients are one of the key partners. The design of the leaflet was also amended.
  • Community Services Poster - the language was changed and the message was simplified to stand out.
  • Public survey - the language was updated and clearer explanations used.

 Review of GP services

Date: Upcoming consultation

Overview:

GP services are often described as the ‘front door’ to the NHS. Most people will choose to go see their GP when they become unwell. There are approximately 9,000 appointments every week across the 60 GP practices in the Borough.

In 2014 we wrote a plan for how GP practices would work and this is now out of date. This was our Primary Care Strategy.

GP services across the Borough are facing a number of challenges. The demand on GP services is increasing and nationally there is a shortage of doctors choosing to be GPs. We think we need to make some changes to the way GP services work in the Borough to address the issues and make them resilient.

We have a vision for GP services but we want to know what people think so that we can write our new strategy.

There are different things we want to talk to people about during the consultation:

  1. The services available when your own GP practice is closed
  2. How your GP practice works
  3. How your GP practice will work with others in the community
  4. Behind the scenes at your GP practice

We have recently recruited a number of volunteers to help with the first element of this; the services available when your own GP practice is closed. The recruitment pack below includes the Terms of Reference for the group:

We recently talked to our Patients Forum about this (January 2019 meeting). There is more information the presentation below:

How to get involved:

We are currently planning a full consultation and we will be planning a number of engagement events when it launches.

If you want to register your interest to take part in the consultation please let us know. Please call 01942 482711 or email shapeyournhs@wiganboroughccg.nhs.uk.

We will keep this page up to date with the consultation survey and events once launched.

Feedback:

Take a look at our “engagement feedback” page. There is some information on there from a previous review of primary care. Information from this latest engagement will be posted in due course.

Stopping prescribing medicines you can buy yourself

Date: 5th March - 7th April

Overview

Every year the NHS spends a lot of money on prescriptions giving out medicines that you can buy yourself without a prescription from a doctor or nurse.  For example, pain killers like paracetamol.

These are called 'over the counter' medicines as they are easily available over a shop counter without a prescription.

Senior managers in NHS England, spoke to lots of people through two consultations, about whether they were happy to buy medicines themselves for some mild illnesses instead of going to the doctor or nurse.

This would save the NHS money and give doctors and nurses more time to see patients who need their help most.

After NHS England had finished talking to people they created new rules to stop doctors giving prescriptions for medicines for 36 mild illnesses.

They would only stop giving prescriptions for medicines when:

  • the medicines don't make you better
  • the medicines are for illnesses that will get better by themselves
  • you can easily buy the medicines from a chemist, supermarket or shop

Doctors, nurses and chemists in Ashton, Leigh and Wigan will soon be following these new rules.

We want to know what you think of the new rules.

How to get involved:

Read the information below and click the link to answer the questions.  The survey will close on 7th April 2019.

Community Neuro-rehabilitation and Stroke services

Date: July – August 2019

Overview:

We are working to improve services for patients who need Neuro-Rehabilitation following discharge from hospital. At the moment there are 3 different teams that provide services:

  1. The Community Stroke Team
  2. The Clinical Neuropsychology Team
  3. The Community Neuro-rehabilitation Team

These teams have different staff that provide specialist advice, support and /or Neuro-rehabilitation for patients and families.

We want to bring these teams together (integrate them) so they start working as one big team.

We believe this change will help us improve the following areas:

  1. Reduce waiting times – see patients quicker
  2. Improve the discharge process from hospital
  3. Remove the need for referrals between teams – more seamless care
  4. All staff working towards the same goals
  5. Make services more resilient – better manage staff absence and cover

We are sharing our proposal and want to get feedback from patients, residents, carers and staff. We have an Easy Read version of the information available below.

How to get involved:

There are different ways you can get involved and give your feedback:

  1. Read the information available and complete our online survey
  2. Download a copy of the information and survey and post it back to us for free
  3. Invite us to a meeting or event
